Robins

Welcome to Robins Class, home to our fantastic Year 1 and Year 2 children at Dodford First School.
Our class teacher is Miss Underhill, who helps to make our classroom a happy, caring and exciting place where every child feels safe, valued and ready to learn.

Learning in Robins Class

In Robins Class, we love to explore, discover and learn together. Our children enjoy a varied and engaging curriculum that helps them build strong foundations in reading, writing and maths while developing their knowledge and curiosity about the wider world.
Learning is brought to life through stories, practical activities, creative projects, investigations and opportunities to learn both inside and outside the classroom.
We encourage our children to ask questions, share their ideas and have a go, helping them to grow in confidence and become increasingly independent learners.

Reading and Phonics

Reading is an important part of life in Robins Class. We want every child to develop a love of books and stories and to become a happy, confident reader.
Through regular phonics teaching, shared stories and opportunities to read and talk about books, children continue to develop the skills they need to become fluent readers and enthusiastic writers.

Growing Together

Our classroom is a kind and welcoming place where we learn to work together, help one another and celebrate each other’s achievements.
Alongside their academic learning, children are encouraged to develop important qualities such as kindness, resilience, independence and respect. We celebrate effort and progress and help every child recognise just how much they can achieve.

We really value the partnership between home and school. By working together, we can help children feel confident, supported and excited about their learning.

Learning Overview

In Robin Class, books take us on wonderful adventures

We love settling down in our cosy reading corner and getting lost in a story. Every day, we look forward to storytime, where we can vote for the book we would like to share together. We enjoy discovering new authors and characters, talking about the stories we read and sharing our favourite books with our friends. Miss Underhill's Book Box is filled with some of her favourite stories for us to explore and enjoy.

In Robin Class, we are all writers

Each week, we look forward to becoming Super Writers. We enjoy exploring stories, learning new words and developing our ideas before putting them down on paper. Our writing area is a place to plan, create, practise and celebrate our writing, helping us to grow in confidence as writers.

In Robin Class, we are active mathematicians!

We believe that maths is something we can explore, investigate and make sense of. We use practical equipment to help us see the maths, test our ideas and explain our thinking. We enjoy getting hands-on with counters, cubes, Numicon, place value equipment, number lines, ten frames and other mathematical manipulatives. These resources help us to explore numbers, solve problems and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical ideas.

In Robin Class, we love to learn through play

Our role play area helps us to use our imaginations, develop our language and bring our learning to life. They change throughout the year to link with our wider topics and give us opportunities to explore, create and learn together.
